VET TEC 2.0 funds non-degree training in high-demand technical fields: computer programming, computer software, data processing, information sciences and media applications.

It's worth knowing the history, because a lot of guidance is out of date. The original VET TEC pilot closed on April 1, 2024. The Dole Act — Public Law 118-210, signed January 2, 2025 — reauthorized it as VET TEC 2.0 under 38 U.S.C. § 3699C. It is open now, so anything telling you the program has ended is describing the old pilot.

It pays tuition and fees directly to your training provider, plus a books and supplies stipend and a monthly housing allowance equal to the Post-9/11 GI Bill rate.

The constraint to plan around is the cap: 4,000 paid participants per fiscal year. That's a queue, not a formality, so applying early in the fiscal year matters.

Who is eligible?

You need at least 36 months of active duty service, and to be under 62 when your application is approved.

It's open to veterans with an honorable discharge, and to serving members within 180 days of separation — the same window as SkillBridge, which makes the two worth planning together.

The program is for non-degree training, so it isn't an alternative route to a bachelor's degree. If that's the goal, the GI Bill is the benefit.

How do I apply?

  • Check the remaining places for the fiscal year: The 4,000-participant cap is published on the VA page, and it draws down through the year.
  • Confirm the provider is approved: VET TEC only pays approved training providers. A bootcamp being reputable is not the same as it being approved.
  • Apply on VA.gov: Through va.gov/education/other-va-education-benefits/vet-tec-2.
  • Check the age and service tests: 36 months of active duty, and under 62 at approval. Both are hard requirements.
  • Note it doesn't spend your GI Bill: You keep your Chapter 33 entitlement, which is the strongest argument for using this first if you qualify.
