From Royal Engineers to Critical Infrastructure: Mikey's Journey to Schneider Electric

After 13 years in the Royal Engineers, Mikey knew it was time for a change. Having joined at 16 and worked his way up to Corporal, he was ready to settle down and build a career that gave him both stability and growth. The challenge? Figuring out where his military skills could take him in the civilian world. That all changed when he discovered Redeployable. Instead of aimlessly applying to jobs, he got tailored career advice, was matched with the right employer, and secured a role within weeks.

Now he’s a UPS Engineer at Schneider Electric, keeping critical power systems running for banks, data centres, and major infrastructure. But getting there wasn’t straightforward.

Military Background: The Skills That Transferred

Mikey’s Army career was deeply rooted in electrical engineering, working hands-on with power systems and generators from the age of 18.

“I was an electrical engineer in the Army. So I did my training when I was like 18 to 21 - generators, power systems, all that sort of thing. It’s done me well for the job I’m in now.”

He had the skills. The question was how to translate them into a civilian role.

The Transition Journey: From Uncertainty to a Clear Path

Like most service leavers, Mikey wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing at first and just went along with the flow, being told one thing and then another. His breakthrough came at a career fair, where a casual chat led to a job offer.

"I saw Suzie, and she said, come down to this assessment day, I didn't really think much of it then, I just said ok, I'll come down and see what it's about. They wanted to see me two weeks later, and I got offered the job."

Mikey, like many veterans, was left navigating career options alone, until he connected with Suzie from Redeployable. Here’s how we made the difference:

🔹 Skills Translation & Career Matching – Mikey didn’t have to guess where his experience fit. Redeployable matched his military expertise with roles that made sense.

🔹 Direct Employer Access – Instead of sending his CV into a black hole, Redeployable got him in front of real hiring managers through an assessment day.

🔹 A Clear Path Forward – No more second-guessing or aimless applications. Redeployable helped Mikey focus on the right opportunities, fast.

Finding the Right Fit: Why Schneider Electric?

Schneider Electric wasn’t just a job, was a structured, supportive transition into civilian work.

"The salary was the main thing, but they were telling me about the work and how no one expects anything of you straight away, you're here to learn. That's what I liked and I still get that feeling now," he shares. "They don't push me too hard, but I think they will in the next year. So, I like that transition because this is all new to me as well."

Unlike some roles where veterans are thrown in the deep end, Schneider Electric offered training, mentorship, and career growth, something Redeployable ensures when matching veterans with employers.

Life at Schneider Electric: Applying Military Skills to a Civilian Career

Now working as a UPS Engineer, Mikey ensures critical power systems stay operational for banks, data centres, and major infrastructure. The role gives him:

A work-life balance that fits his needs
A technical challenge that keeps him engaged
The ability to apply military problem-solving every day

“Some days I could be working two days, then have a random day off. I’m getting home enough, and I’m working away a little bit.”

His military training in troubleshooting and quick decision-making has been essential to his success.

“Some of the engineers I’ve worked with, they’ve seen me ask a question and said, ‘Why are you asking that?’ And I just say, ‘Well, I’m never going to know if I don’t ask.’ No question is a stupid question.”

Mikey’s Advice for Other Veterans

Mikey’s biggest takeaway? Use every resource available.

“From the start, just take everything the military offers you on your resettlement. Take everything you can, even if it’s a course you don’t think you want to do. Just do it if it’s free.”

And when it comes to interviews?

“Don’t be afraid to tell them what you can offer and what you do and don’t know. They just want to see the real you.”
