Army Career Skills Program Explained
CSP is the Army's regulatory framework for putting a transitioning soldier into industry training — an internship, apprenticeship, on-the-job training or employment skills program — while still on active duty and still being paid. It is the route by which an Army soldier does what the rest of the world calls SkillBridge, governed by AR 600-81.
Duration is set by rank category, under MILPER 26-175, and no delegation of approval authority is permitted:
| Category | Rank | Duration | Approval authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | E1–E5 | up to 120 days | first field grade commander with UCMJ authority |
| II | E6–E7, WO1–CW3, O1–O3 | up to 90 days | first O6 commander with UCMJ authority |
| III | E8–E9, CW4–CW5, O4 and above | up to 60 days | first General Officer in the chain with GCMCA |
So a senior NCO gets half the window a junior soldier does, and needs a general officer to sign it. If you are planning a 120-day fellowship as an E-7, that is the constraint to design around.
Exceptions to policy are decided by DCS, G-1.
You may do only ONE CSP while on Title 10 active duty orders.
Who is eligible?
You must have completed at least 180 continuous days of active-duty service and expect an Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) discharge.
CSP was written for "high risk" soldiers — by regulation, age 18–24, first-term enlistment, involuntary separation due to force shaping, rapid separation from active duty, or medical separation. In practice all transitioning soldiers with a qualifying discharge are welcome.
You cannot start earlier than 180 days from your separation or retirement date — and that is the separation date, not the terminal leave date. This is statute, not policy: 10 U.S.C. § 1143(e)(2)(B). There is no exception to policy available, because there is no policy to except.
MEB soldiers are the exception that helps. Soldiers in IDES or assigned to a Soldier Recovery Unit may begin a CSP immediately following their Medical Retention Determination Point, rather than waiting for a 180-day mark.
Money is on you. Travel, housing and equipment for a CSP are the soldier's cost. Two things soften it: an AER grant (non-taxable), obtainable after the CSP packet is approved, and Space-A travel. Budget for it before you accept an out-of-area placement.
Two administrative traps. You need an administrative absence if the program is more than 50 miles from your duty station — inside 50 miles you attend present-for-duty. And unless you get a pre-clearing exception to policy, you must return to your permanent duty station after the CSP finishes, which is a travel cost people forget.
How do I apply?
- Work out your rank category first: It fixes your maximum duration and who signs it.
- Count 180 days back from your separation date: Not your terminal leave date. It is statute and cannot be waived.
- Start the packet early for Category III: A general officer signature takes longer than a field grade one.
- Budget travel, housing and equipment: These are yours to pay. Apply for an AER grant once the packet is approved.
- Request administrative absence beyond 50 miles: Inside 50 miles you attend present-for-duty.
- Ask about MRDP if you are in IDES or an SRU: You may be able to start immediately rather than waiting for the 180-day mark.
Common questions
How long can you do an Army Career Skills Program?
It depends on rank. Up to 120 days for E1-E5, up to 90 days for E6-E7, WO1-CW3 and O1-O3, and up to 60 days for E8-E9, CW4-CW5 and O4 and above.
How early can you start a CSP?
No earlier than 180 days from your separation or retirement date, not your terminal leave date. This comes from 10 U.S.C. 1143 and cannot be waived by exception to policy.
What is the difference between CSP and SkillBridge?
SkillBridge is the Defense Department program; CSP is the Army's regulatory framework under AR 600-81 that authorizes a soldier to take part, with its own rank-tiered durations and approval chain.
Who approves an Army CSP?
The first field grade commander with UCMJ authority for E1-E5, the first O6 commander for E6-E7, WO1-CW3 and O1-O3, and the first General Officer with general court-martial convening authority for E8-E9, CW4-CW5 and O4 and above. No delegation is authorized.
Does the Army pay for CSP travel and housing?
No. Travel, housing and equipment are the soldier's cost. An Army Emergency Relief grant is available after the CSP packet is approved, and Space-A travel is an option.
