Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) Explained
TDIU pays you at the 100% rate when your service-connected conditions stop you working — even though your schedular rating is lower.
Your rating does not change. A veteran granted TDIU at a combined 70% keeps the 70% rating on paper and receives the 100% payment. That distinction confuses people, and it matters when they later look at rating-threshold benefits.
The schedular routes in are specific:
- One service-connected disability rated 60% or higher, or
- Two or more disabilities with at least one rated 40% or more and a combined rating of 70% or more.
The VA can also grant TDIU below those thresholds in certain cases — frequent hospitalisation is the example it gives — so falling short of the numbers is not automatically the end of the question.
At current rates, the difference is substantial: 70% pays $1,808.45 a month with no dependents against $3,938.58 at the 100% rate.
Who is eligible?
You need to meet one of the schedular routes above, and you need to be unable to secure or follow substantially gainful employment because of your service-connected conditions.
That second part is the real test, and it is about your service-connected conditions specifically — not age, not the job market, and not non-service-connected health problems.
"Substantially gainful" is the operative phrase. Marginal employment, generally understood as earnings below the federal poverty threshold for one person, does not necessarily disqualify you. Working at all is not an automatic bar, though earnings above that line will be looked at closely.
How do I apply?
- Check which schedular route you meet: 60% on a single condition, or 70% combined with one at 40%. Knowing which applies shapes the claim.
- Document the work impact, not just the diagnosis: The question is whether you can hold substantially gainful employment. Employment history, terminations and reduced hours are the evidence.
- Be precise that it is the service-connected conditions: Age and the job market do not count towards it, and mixing them in weakens the claim.
- Ask about it if you are near the thresholds: A combined 70% with one condition at 40% is a common position that people do not realise qualifies them to apply.
- Use an accredited VSO: TDIU turns on employability evidence rather than medical evidence alone, and that is harder to assemble unaided.
Common questions
What rating do you need for TDIU?
One condition at 60% or higher, or two or more with at least one at 40% and a combined rating of 70% or more. The VA can also grant it below those levels in certain cases, such as frequent hospitalisation.
Does TDIU change your disability rating?
No. Your rating stays as it is; you are simply paid at the 100% rate.
How much more is TDIU worth?
At current rates, 70% pays $1,808.45 a month with no dependents while the 100% rate is $3,938.58.
Can you work at all and receive TDIU?
Marginal employment — generally earnings below the federal poverty threshold for one person — does not necessarily disqualify you. Earnings above that will be examined closely.
Does age or the job market count?
No. The test is whether your service-connected conditions prevent substantially gainful employment.
