Tom Bennett: British Army REME to Sales Development Representative

Tom had already left his role in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the British Army, but was stuck on auto-pilot in his first job post-forces. He wanted something he could get excited about and really make an impact. 

Through working with Redeployable, Tom quickly found his military skills could be easily applied to a new and exciting industry.

What was the role and company all about?

Descartes needed a new Sales Development Rep. As an innovative logistics solutions business, they needed new sales representatives who would handle the fast-paced nature of the business.

“Getting access to individuals who are structured, hard-working, coachable and want to develop themselves and the company – it’s only a positive for us,”  - Zaeem Batavia, Sales Director at Descartes Systems Group. 

They’re a diverse and rapidly growing company. So really, they had little trouble attracting new talent. But they wanted candidates who would grow their careers and commit to a hugely exciting industry.

He had a very smooth recruitment process, in fact, it was so fast that Descartes interviewed him once, and knew he was perfect for the role. 

Tom realised that he had the perfect skill set, both hard and soft skills. 

Negotiation, communicating clearly to different stakeholders, and having the confidence to push himself to deliver on targets means Tom was able to transition into civvy-street with great success. 

Plus, skills like problem-solving that he mastered in his engineering position in the military translate perfectly to tech sales, where you have to offer solutions to a huge variety of different businesses with vastly different problems.
